At the Heart of Numbat Fashion: A Tribute to Veronika Guardi

Every brand has a history, but ours is uniquely different. At the heart of Numbat Fashion is a story of family, resilience, and passion. Our daughter, Veronika, was not only a talented designer but also a visionary who infused her love for vintage fashion and sustainability into our brand. To us, Numbat without a designer is like a mother without a daughter.

Today, as I prepare our third collection without her—without my daughter, without the designer—I face a profound challenge. I could turn to another designer, but I don’t want to. Continuing this journey was meant to be my continuation of her legacy, as life often dictates. However, for us, the opposite has happened. I find myself searching for answers as to why.

Even as a child, Veronika loved coming to our family factory in Europe. She would paint designs on garments that were already finished. As a textile engineer, I have always made clothing without a design sketch, crafting the cuts directly. Veronika would tell me, “You are only a textile engineer; you need a designer too. That’s why I will become a designer, and we will be one, like mother and daughter.”

She pursued her passion for design in England and became the designer she always dreamed of being. We truly became a team, working together as mother and daughter, as partners in our brand. For ten years, we collaborated seamlessly, blending our roles as designer and technologist. Veronika was not only the creative force behind Numbat; she also helped create new clothing brands around the world, drawing and working closely with customers to understand their needs. I focused on production, ensuring that her visions came to life.

Together, we achieved everything we wanted. We had success, fulfillment, and a deep bond. But now, I find myself making clothes again without designer sketches and without her guiding hand. It’s incredibly challenging to navigate this path alone. I am reminded daily that she is gone—not just the designer and business partner but my daughter.

Yet, as I create this new collection, I hold on to her spirit. Every stitch, every fabric choice is a tribute to her passion and vision. While the journey is difficult, I am committed to honoring Veronika’s legacy through our work, ensuring that her love for vintage fashion and sustainability continues to inspire all of us.
